The Solitariness of God

The Attributes of God
God is…Solitary

Definition:

God is solitary in His Excellency. God is uniquely alone in His character and nature. There is no other god equal to God; therefore God is single or solitary in His nature and character. God is the only being which everlastingly existed, everlastingly exists, and everlastingly will exist in His uniquely divine character.

Meaning:

Therefore, God has eternally been self-contained, self-sufficient, and self-satisfied. God has never been in need of anything nor has God ever lacked anything. There can be nothing neither added nor subtracted from the essential nature of God. God does not change (immutability). As the Scripture states, there are no other gods like God.

Scripture Support:

Exodus 15:11 – “Who is like unto Thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like Thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?”

Deuteronomy 3:24 – “O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand, For what god is thee in heave or on earth who can do such works and might acts as yours.” (ESV)

Deuteronomy 33:26 – “There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help.” (ESV)

Psalms 86:8 – “There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours.” (ESV)

Conclusion

Solitariness is the term that we use to help us understand that God is uniquely distinct from any other being or entity. There is no one, nothing, nor every will be like as or the same as God in quality or character.

Application

Since there is no other gods like God, He is to be reverenced and worshipped in accordance with His character and nature. We do not make up the rules and means of worship but our worship is borne out of his very solitary and unique character. God is not to be trifled with nor treated as less than his unique and solitary character demands. God is not like us nor should he be treated like us.

So, what is your response to the solitariness of God?

"God is not like us nor should he be treated like us."

Amen to that! There seems to be a trend to make God almost needy and dependent on man as though His solitariness (interpreted as loneliness) was the reason for creating mankind. To imply that God is "love-sick" for man, elevates man and demeans His character, thus making Him more like us

God is totally self-sufficient. We are the ones in dire need of Him, not the other way round. Our response should be worship that He would show mercy to us.

The attributes of God truly reveal how magnificent and glorious our God is. This side of heaven we are only given a glimpse of the majesty of God and He is often difficult to understand. But the day is coming when the blinders will be taken off and we will know Him and praise Him forevermore.

1 Corinthians 13:12 (ESV)
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

1 John 3:2 (ESV)
Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is

I'm so grateful for a God like ours. He is faithful and good. He never leaves us or forsakes us and He provides us strength when ours is gone. I'm more grateful for Him today than ever before.

Great post Brother.

PM - Amen! Right on! You go girl! Your comments are enthusiastically biblical and I appreciate them.

OG - You are right; the attributes are God's glorious character of which we only see in part. He is more magnificient than our finite minds could behold.

BRT - Thanks for your comments. The world does not nor can they see the brightness of God's image or glory. They hate God, the despise God and run from God deep into darkness because their deeds are dark. Only when the Holy Spirit of God sovereignly gives a man life can see begin to see and appreciate the glorious nature of God. Until then mankind exchanges the glorious God of heaven for idols.

Lisa - glad to see your comment again. I missed you. Have prayed for you. Yes, it is good that we have a sovereign God who is good, faithful and has promised never to leave us nor forsake us, whose only thoughtss toward us is good!
