New Day for Presbyterians

Thirty years of debate, discussion, and disagreement came to an end Tuesday, May 10th, 2011 with the ratification of a measure that allows the ordination of homosexual men and women in the Presbyterian Church, USA. This makes the fourth mainline denomination to permit homosexual ordinations. The other three mainline denominations to allow such ordinations are the Episcopal and Evangelical Lutherans and the United Church of Christ.

After the vote, Michael Adee, a Presbyterian Elder said, "This is an important moment in the Christian Communion. I rejoice that Presbyterians are focusing on what matters most - faith and character, not a person's marital status or sexual orientation."

I personally found one comment appalling. Linda Fleming, an elder and a deacon at Knox Presbyterian Church in in Ladera Heights (CA) had changed her mind on this issue in recent years. She said, "I finally decided at the age of 63 that it is inevitable. I think it is like letting black people come to white churches or letting women become ministers. It's inevitable."

Inevitable? Is that how we determine biblical or ecclesiastical practices? Do we determine standards based on inevitability rather than the Scriptures? Isn't "sexual orientation" a matter of faith and character? There is no denying that a major push from various homosexual organizations, government policies and supporters, and religious organizations are pushing very hard to both legalize and normalize this biblically condemned practice.

The greater tragedy is this sin is not the only sin making headway against the church. Satan's strategy seems to be to get the church distracted on one or two major issues and then infiltrate the church with a number of other sins to divide, dilute, and devour. The church needs to remain alert, sober, and on its guard!

I can understand little rouge cults doing this, but mainline denominations?

I think it all goes back to apathy. As long as Christians are apathetic, these kinds of 'allowances' are going to happen. Praying our nations' eyes and hearts are opened to the Truth.

I've never understood this. If you read the Bible, (old and new testaments) this is not an option. so I have to infer that these denominations no longer us the Bible as their plumb line...

thanks for sharing...

My first "job" in the church was as a youth pastor in a Presbyterian church. Strange for a Southern Baptist some thought. I used to tell them that theologically, the primary difference between Pres. and historic S.Bapt. was over the issue of paedobaptism vs. credobaptism, since we share roots in the Westminster Confession. Guess I'll have to change that statement to say the difference is that S.B. still hold to the authority of Scripture, huh?

Sadly, this is the church I came from. I'm EPC, now, but my home church is still in this denomination and refuses to go even though they are against homosexuality. Although, it is hard because when churches leave to go EPC, the PCUSA really persecutes them with property lawsuits. It's a no win situations and conservatives who remain in the PCUSA really need prayers as they are in an apostate denomination.

God have mercy on us.

And, Scott, let's not lump all Presbyterians in with the USA. I think it's been obvious for some time that they rely only on their own depraved understanding and not the Word of God.

I didn't think I'd see that happen. You can't expect anything anymore I guess? What happened to Sola Scriptura as a defining point in their denomination? Have they completely forgotten their roots?

God has given them over to the listfull desires of there own minds. What is so sad here is that the world looks on and says this is represetitive of the church, when it is not the real church.

No, they're not.

Also, it irritates me the way that advocates of homosexuality equate sexual preference with the civil rights issues of the 1950s and 1960s.

The tares seem to be overcoming the wheat in the visible "church". But God's Church in Christ (the elect) is growing just as He planned since before the foundation of the earth :-)
