Study to be Approved (Part IV)

WHY I DON'T USE A READING PLAN

Some people like to read so many [Bible] chapters every day. I would not dissuade them from the practice, but I would rather lay my soul asoak in half a dozen verses all day than rinse my hand in several chapters. Oh, to be bathed in a text of Scripture, and to let it be sucked up in your very soul, till it saturates your heart!

I have a lot of misgivings about Bible plans myself. When people embark on year-long Bible reading plans, they often don't finish; and, when they do finish, they often haven't learned much, as they have just raced through the text to check off a box. The heart is definitely in the right place, but the method is played. I think that slow, repeated reading of one book or group of books is very helpful. Also, there are a number of books that provide decent summaries of the entire Bible that can supplement close, slow reading.

Yvonne - Thank you very much!

Leslie - Your comment is right on and very insightful. I have said the same thing you said for years. You are so right and it is so tragic. So many are made to feel guilty if they are not reading their bible on some type of plan. Thank you for getting it.
