One day while running errands my wife and I came up quite hungry. We thought it was a perfect "Subway Saturday." However, our Triangle Mall in Longview has a Quisnos Sandwich shop. Rather than drive to a Subway we decided to give Quisnos a try. It was good - the sandwich wasn't bad, but we liked the process and product at Subway better. Thus far that was our only visit to a Quisnos. (And not because it was bad, just prefer Subway)
QIP Holder LLC (d/b/a Quiznos)
is a franchised fast-food restaurant brand based in Denver, Colorado,
which specializes in offering toasted submarine sandwiches. The restaurant
chain was founded in 1981 by Jimmy Lambatos and sold to Rick and Richard
Schaden in 1991, and grew to nearly 5,000 restaurants. As of the end of 2013,
the chain had about 1,500 domestic locations and about 600 international locations.
Quiznos is the second-largest submarine sandwich shop chain in North
America, after Subway
The first Quiznos restaurant was opened in Denver,
Colorado, by founder Jimmy Lambatos. At the time, Lambatos was an
experienced chef, having previously worked as an executive chef for the
Colorado Mine Co. Steakhouse, and having founded the Italian restaurant Footers
in 1978. He founded Quiznos with partner Todd Disner in the spring of 1981. The
first location was at the corner of 13th and Grant Streets in the Capitol Hill
neighborhood of the city. According to Kevin Jenkins, "It was there that
recipes for Quiznos special baguette-style bread, special dressings and unique
recipes were created."
According to Patrick Sweeney, "The sandwich shop earned
a following for its toasted subs that Lambatos said were inspired by the
oven-baked sandwiches he enjoyed while growing up in New York." Lambatos
said of his decision to toast the submarine sandwiches at the first Quiznos
that, "it's a signature type of thing. Heating anything brings out the
flavors in food products." The restaurant
menu featured toasted submarine sandwiches, as well as salads, soups, and
desserts

I tend to prefer Subway as well. And I like Jersey Mike's even better. We have a store from both of these chains within easy walking distance of where I live. There used to be a Quiznos in the shopping center across the street from us, but they closed down and a Starbucks opened in their place. In fact on of my daughters worked at that Quiznos for a while.
ReplyDeleteI've eaten at various Quiznos locations a number of times when it kind of sounded good and I wanted a change from Subway. To me the heating process seems to make the sandwich kind of slimy or something and not quite as appetizing as a traditional cold sub. I'm not a big fan of heated lunch meat unless it's fried baloney and then I rarely eat that on a sandwich.
Now you got me craving a sub. Tomorrow my wife will be late at school for open house so I think I'll have a sub for dinner. Probably Jersey Mikes. I like the ingredients they use better.
