"People do not drift toward holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord. We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated."

- D. A. Carson

  2. What a great quote to remind us of that which we ought to be constantly aware of.. "drifting" from the narrow way.

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." ~ Romans 12:2

We conform to this world when we follow our sinful nature. When we compromise the truth (or avoid it) in order to be liked by or attract the world.

Many modern preachers need to really consider the part about "compromise" as this is exactly what they are doing when they water-down the word in order to be 'culturally relevant' to the unregenerate 'seeeker'.

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Unfortunately this is becoming the norm in a lot of Christian churches today. Too many preachers are trying to satisfy the crowds with a "warm and fuzzy feeling" message instead of preaching the truth from God's Word. Blessings, Lloyd

  4. Excellent quote by Dr. Carson. We don't know ourselves if we think we are naturally predisposed towards God and godly things.

  5. Yvonne - glad you enjoyed!

John - It is a great quote, we definitely need the reminder, and you are welcome.

Lloyd - I have seen it to many times where no one wants to rock the boat and try to please everyone. As you know you can't please everyone, why do they try?

PM - I agree, it is great quote from D A Carson. You are right if we don't think this applies we have drifted already!

  6. Lord, forgive me for the all times I drift toward the world and not You, when You're the only one who is worthy of my affections.
